This is very similar to jantanik's topic though I'm going to go more in depth.

Colour
First off, you need colours that fit to your eyes, and other peoples eyes. Rather than having something that is black try a more brighter colour so it's more florescent and calming, rather than depressing and tiring. You must be colour proportionate random colours do NOT mix!

Images
As you've heard 'reducing images increases page load time' that is true, but, they're not reducing it to the best of their ability! To maximise image load time and be more efficient is to host images on ONLY one host mixing different hosts like 'tinypic, photobucket, imageshack, etc...' is very bad as they're loading in before your site has even started loading!

Grammar
Using proper grammar is very professional in web site design as people do not want to read something that is just unreadable. Who would even bother with a text document or a message with nothing but horrible guff in? No one. Do not want
